Stubble Burning Solution: 5 Rupee Capsule to Convert Stubble to Compost

Indian scientists at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) have found a solution for crop residue burning.  This stubble burning solution is a five rupee capsule that will convert stubble to compost.

The Solution

Fifteen-year hard work of scientists at IARI finally paid off. They developed a capsule that will convert crop residue into compost. Moreover, it contains friendly fungus that will provide essential micro nutrients to the soil increasing its fertility.

According to scientists, one acre of land requires four capsules to convert the stubble into compost. It is an economical method requiring no large investments. Even small farmers can get it. However, this capsule is only available at the IARI, Delhi. No announcement has been made regarding its availability in stores.

Benefits

Yudhveer Singh, Principal scientist of the Department of Microbiology IARI, stated that the capsule has no side effects. Its use decomposes the waste into compost. Moreover, it maintains the moisture of the field for a long time.

Why is it Essential?

The increased stubble burning caused problems not only for Delhi but also for the farmers. Not being aware of its effects on soil fertility, farmers continue to burn the crop residue. The high temperature due to burning kills friendly bacteria and insects in the soil. Besides, it increases the water requirements of the field for the next sowing season. With every burn, the quality of the field deteriorates.

How to use it?

1. Boil 150gm of old jaggery in water. Remove dirt that comes on the top while boiling.

2. Let the jaggery cool down to room temperature then mix it in five litres of water. Add 50 gms of gram flour to it.

3. Now take an earthen or plastic pot with a longer diameter and mix four capsules in the solution prepared.

4. Leave the solution in a warm place for five days. Keep mixing the top solid layer that forms on the water. Make sure to wear gloves and a mask while mixing.

5. The solution is ready for use. Five litres of the solution is enough to convert 10 quintals of straw to compost.

In conclusion, this stubble burning solution might help in tackling air pollution in north India.
