Pegasus Software
NSO Group, an Israeli cyber-intelligence firm’s Spyware Pegasus has triggered outrage around the globe. Most notably, it has erupted several political controversies in the nation. Supporting this is a report from 17 media channels (18th July) that claim that at least 300 Indian mobile phones were snooped using the Pegasus Software. Among them are BJP ministers, opposition leaders, top lawyers, businessmen, rights activists and journalists.
Initially, Pegasus made headlines in 2019 when WhatsApp confirmed that the spyware was used to target around 1,400 users including journalists and human rights activists in India. Further, WhatsApp claimed to fix and block the spyware from penetrating the phone. However, Pegasus found other ways to spy on individuals.
The Snooping Denial
Even though a list encompasses glimpses of information, India denies unauthorized surveillance. On the other hand, the Pegasus founder firm defends its product and denies any wrongdoings. They claim to have used the spyware to investigate criminal and terrorist activities. Furthermore, forensic reports have confirmed traces of the spyware. However, the government refuses to opine on the matter.
NSO Defends the Software
The firm’s spokesperson claims that the spyware is helping make the world a better place. Also, he added that it helps many people sleep peacefully at night. Further, the firm claims to have unveiled several terror calls.
As of now, the list of all the individuals that were targeted by the spyware is yet to be released. A case against spyware is ongoing in the supreme court as well.
