The Government of Iran have finally approved restrictions on cultivation of rice. The decision applies to all provinces other than Provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran. The decision made by the cabinet of ministers conveyed to all subjected provinces across Iran for implementation. The Agricultural Ministry of Iran will be introducing new alternate crops for cultivation.
Water Shortage in Iran
The Committee for Adaptability to water shortage had approved gradual banning of cultivation of rice in three years’ time in all provinces other than the two provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran. Tacking the water crises crucial for the Government with regional efforts and support. The Iran Government had approached cooperation from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to resolve the water crisis.
Iran Basmati Rice Consumption
Iran consumes 4 million tons of rice every year. The domestic production of rice in Iran stands at 2.20 million tons. Remaining balance is imported from India, Pakistan, Thailand and other countries.
Every year during harvest season which is September to December, Iran bans import of rice. To support the local farmers and domestic production of rice. The current data reveals that Iran cultivates 630,000 hectares of paddy fields out of which 170,000 hectares are located in Gilan and Mazandaran.
Good News for Indian Basmati Rice Exporters
This is good news for Indian Basmati Rice exporters, millers and farmers who will benefit from increased import of Basmati Rice from Iran. Shorter period of ban on import of Rice to Iran will also benefit the exporters and millers. The Ministry of Agriculture in Iran announced that the ban on import of rice to be postponed to September 22nd 2019 as per reports on Trade Promotion Organisation of Iran.
