The Governments of Delhi and Maharashtra may impose lockdown from June 15 as the number of COVID cases skyrocket.
Rising Cases in Delhi and Maharashtra
The national capital has been registering more than 2000 cases daily on average. Delhi reported around 2134 new cases in the last 24 hours, including 129 fatalities. Also, Maharashtra is registering over 3000 new COVID-19 cases daily along with 100 plus deaths. The two states are the worst hit in the country.
Worrisome Situation
The rapid surge in cases is worrisome for both states. A senior doctor from Delhi said that lockdown or not, people must go outside only if they must. Moreover, they should wear masks and wash their hands frequently. Further, he added that if infections rise at the same pace, then Delhi would face a shortage of beds and ventilators and there will be a crisis.
Government is Preparing for the Peak
Citing the severity of the situation, health minister Satyendar Jain said that the government is preparing for the peak. He also noted the central government’s help and confirmed usage of central hospital for COVID-19 if required.
Maharashtra CM Hints Towards Lockdown Again
Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray while speaking to reporters, hinted at the re-imposition of complete lockdown in the state. His statement comes after Mumbai’s Marine Drive and other public places saw large crowds defying lockdown and social distancing norms. He added that the state government is monitoring the situation very closely. Consequently, it would not hesitate to ensure strict lockdown if people continue to defy the social distancing norms and appear in large groups in public places.
No Community Transmission yet
Likewise, the situation in Delhi is deteriorating too. However, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia asserted that there is no community transmission. Moreover, he predicted that the state will register around 5.5 lakh cases by 31st July and will need around 80,000 beds for the same.
A screenshot indicating the imposition of strict lockdown from 15th June by MHA circulated the social media. However, PIB Fact Check (which counters misinformation on government policies) busted the fake message soon on Twitter.
In all, the situation is not improving as of now and people must stay safe by taking necessary precautions.
